Haircut gets kid into trouble

In Ohio, A six (6) year old school boy was suspended for sporting a Mohawk haircut. While the mom laments the decision, school authorities contend that the hairdo is against the rules and the boy/parents were warned twice, prior to the suspension. They are probably afraid that he’d grow up to become an undesirable citizen like those who closed the Mercer Island High School by sending bomb threats. I am not sure what got into the mom and why was she was complaining. She could have complained during the issuance of first two warnings and probably resolved the issue before it got worse. I do not condemn the school for its actions. They warned the parents twice and the parent’s action of having the boys hair cut again (in the same way) was in effect taunting the school to act. For me, it was nothing short of disrespect. The school’s action was actually, similar to what a school in Bloomfield is doing.

EDUCATION IN IRAQ

Searching for the status of education in Iraq, here's what I found,

Assistance has helped Iraq move away from rote learning methodology in decrepit, unsanitary classrooms to interactive learning in rehabilitated buildings. Since 2003, USAID has rehabilitated nearly 3,000 schools. Over 20 million new textbooks have been supplied by USAID (8.6 million) and UNESCO (12 million). Tens of thousands of primary school teachers have received training and technical assistance.

Through the Higher Education and Development (HEAD) more than 1,500 Iraqi faculty and students have participated in workshops, trainings, conferences, and courses all over the world since January 2004. Program efforts have rehabilitated university facilities throughout the country.

Free newspaper for 2 poor kids

A communications student and a farmer in the Philippines were awarded by a one year free subscription to the Philippine daily Inquirer. The subscriptions were part of a promo named "22 Wishes" to commemorate the papers 22nd year in service.

While that might not mean much for most of the world, it is a very bog deal for some people in a country where poverty continues to be a major problem. The minimum wage in the country is just a little under $7 per day and yet, a big number of employees are said to be earning much less than that. And since a copy of a newspaper is about $0.50, a lot of people dispense with its purchase to be able to survive.

Philippine government cancels cyber education project

In the Philippines, a $465 million Cyber Education project was cancelled after allegations of corruption became very widespread. Initially, estimated to cost a mere $100 million, critics allege that anomalies took place and it resulted to the huge jump of the project cost. The CyberEd project is supposed to enable far flung schools to receive live broadcasts from master teachers, course wares on demand and other important materials. Had the project pushed through, poor students are supposed to benefit the most when CyberEd becomes fully operational after three years. But with the project becoming so controversial, it is unlikely that it will be revived soon. Without any doubt, the biggest losers will be the poor students in rural areas who are at this point, lagging far behind those studying in urban private schools. For most of them, education is the only hope to escape the bondage of poverty. And with this latest setback, that hope of deliverance is once again, far from being realized.
